Gustav Mahler’s

Symphony No. 5

Composed in 1901 and 1902 during the summer months, Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler obtains a large emotional scope of work. The distinct features of rhythmic highs and lows produces the most disjointed yet combining evocation of sounds.

Incorporating this into a record label, my approach focused on the soft light sounds contrasting against the heavier and more distinctive features of the piece that ultimately juxtaposed one another.

Therefore, the graphic use of individual cut out imagery was placed at the centre of this label to symbolise the disjointed sounds combining into one. When listening to the piece, which I highly recommend, we the listener can visualise the warm summer night with dancing flora elements and a bright night sky. It is these elements of Mahler’s composition that work behind the meaning of the bright different colours used in the lettering to symbolise the kaleidoscope of flora and inspiration of the piece.
